PRE OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHILDREN

Pre-operative Instructions – Children 

 

Please ensure that you have completed the online admission as directed by the staff at SCENT.

 IMPORTANT: Some medications need to be ceased prior to surgery.

 Medications

 Herbal medications / Supplements

Must be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery.

 Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)

Must be stopped 1 week prior to surgery.

Please see list overleaf for examples of medications in this category

If your child requires painkillers during this time, please use Panadol.

 Diabetic medications

If your child takes Insulin, discuss how to alter the dose with your Anaesthetist.

CT scans or X Rays

Please bring these with you to hospital.

Failure to do so may result in cancellation of your child’s surgery.

Day Before Surgery

 The Hospital will contact you on the afternoon or evening prior to your child’s surgery to confirm arrival time and fasting time.

The Day of Surgery

  • We schedule children early on the list and make every effort to make their hospital stay is pleasant as possible.
  • Please dress your child in loose fitting clothes or pyjamas (not all-in-one suits).
  • Bring nappies if these are usually worn at night.
  • One parent can accompany the child into the operating theatre until they are asleep.
  • If your child is staying overnight, one parent must stay with them.
  • Please feel free to bring their favourite comforter or toy.
  • Your child must not eat for 6 hours prior to surgery.
  • A small amount of clear fluids (water or clear juice, but NOT milk) may be given up to 3 hours before surgery.

BLOOD THINNING MEDICATION

ASPIRIN and medications which contain aspirin

NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

Advil (Ibuprofen)
Nurofen (Ibuprofen)
Brufen (Ibuprofen)
Voltaren (Diclofenac)
